Alserkal Avenue-based art gallery The Third Line, which is dedicated to contemporary Middle Eastern artists, is hosting a group exhibition until 31 July. Titled ‘I Will See It, When I Believe It’, this show teases the notion of perception and creates a sense of dissonance between what is expected and what is seen.

Each of the artists in this collection plays upon this assumption by creating works that elicit confusion, failure and second impressions.

In consonance with the charming ambience and unique heritage of the city of Liwa, also known as the Gate of the Empty Quarter, in Al Dhafra region in Abu Dhabi, the Cultural Programmes and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi is organising the Liwa Date Festival under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.
The festival pursues the Committee’s strategy, inspired by the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (May God Bless His Soul), of preserving and sustaining authentic Emirati heritage, specifically the country’s palm trees and Ratab (half-ripe dates). For centuries, palm trees and Ratab have been an integral part of Emirati society and its deep-rooted traditions. Hence, the festival is a reflection of our wise leadership’s efforts to pay tribute to these living symbols of the past's authenticity, the present's prosperity and the future's promise.
The festival will feature various internationally acclaimed Emirati heritage activities and competitions that have been extremely popular in past editions. Today, the Liwa Date Festival is widely recognised as a unique gathering for those passionate about the role of palm trees and Ratab, including individuals and companies.
The Liwa Date Festival is also a great opportunity to learn about Emirati customs and traditions and to discover locals industries and handicraft products. Visitors can attend the Date Beauty Contest (Mazayna) and its accompanying activities and events. They can also take part in the interactive platform, which is open for all family members and visitors.

The exhibition’s theme is inspired by Gestalt psychology, founded in Germany in 1912, which suggests that the brain amalgamates an image of the whole from a split second of the part.

“By Cerise” is a series of plays by Cerise De Gelder, a playwright based in Melbourne, Australia. Catch “Unforgettable” and “Snap” performed at The Junction, an independent performance theatre in Alserkal Avenue. “Unforgettable” tells a story that spans multiple centuries – from the 1500s to modern day. It all shares one common denominator – a piece of art everyone thought would be forgotten in the annals of time. The second play, “Snap,” is a dark comedy about friends stuck on a promontory – raised land that descends into lowland or water – with a dead body. Inevitably, skeletons start walking out of each character’s closet to reveal unexpected truths.

A Sundance award-winning film, “Unrest” shares the story of Jennifer Brea, a Harvard PhD student who suffers from a fever that leaves her bedridden. Doctors keep telling her that her ailments are all in her head but she begins documenting her journey with chronic fatigue syndrome, a disease all but forgotten in medicine. A story of love, perseverance and a hidden community, “Unrest” brings to light a battle for answers and cures. See a free screening at Cinema Akil, Dubai's first and permanent independent film theatre.
The exhibition’s theme is inspired by Gestalt psychology, founded in Germany in 1912, which suggests that the brain amalgamates an image of the whole from a split second of the part. Each of the artists in this collection plays upon this assumption by creating works that elicit confusion, failure and second impressions.
The Al Qattara Arts Centre will be holding a children’s ‘Summer Camp’ this summer! The programme will include art workshops, educational workshops and archaeological workshops, as well as weekly trips to the cultural sites of Al Ain.
Registration opens on Sunday, 9 June on a first come first serve basis
Registration fee for the whole programme and all workshops is AED 315 per person (price includes VAT)
Age group: 6 to 13 years
